Neil McGregor has, as a barrister and a mediator, specialised predominantly in the field of Family Law for more than 25 years.
He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand in 1974, before moving to Australia. In Queensland, he was admitted as a solicitor in 1980, and as a barrister in 1984.
The resolution of family law disputes frequently requires detailed knowledge and experience of other areas of the law. Neil’s clients in family law matters have the benefit of the knowledge and experience that he has amassed over the length of his career, through advising and representing clients in many other areas of the law, including: the drafting of Wills and contracts, converyancing, complex commercial transactions, criminal matters (both at trial and on appeal), personal injuries, and civil, commercial and property litigation. This deep and wide-ranging experience enables Neil to ensure that his clients receive the best possible outcome, tailored to their personal circumstances.
Many family law disputes are inextricably linked with social problems. The Court process, which is geared towards the parties adopting an adversarial position, and which culminates in a Court-imposed decision, is not necessarily the ideal process for resolving such disputes. Neil evaluates each client’s case, to determine whether the underlying concern can be addressed more effectively before the imposition of a Court decision, by way of assisting the client to explore other options for resolution of their dispute.
Neil is accredited as a mediator under the National Mediator Accreditation System (NMAS), and as an arbitrator, in accordance with reg. 67B of the Family Law Regulations 1984 (Cth), to arbitrate disputes of the kinds specified in s 10L of the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth). He is a member of the Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators (AIFLAM).
He is a member of the Family Law Practitioners Association of Queensland (FLPA).
Throughout his career, Neil has contributed as an author to various legal publications, including Butterworth’s Court Forms, and Pleadings Queensland. He is former reporter for the Queensland Reports.
He regularly presents and speaks at specialist legal conferences and seminars, on the many facets that make up Family Law.
Neil is listed in Doyle’s Guide to the Australian Legal Profession, an independent ranking of legal practitioners based on peer review:

Neil is mindful of the effects that family law disputes and litigation have on families, both in the short term and over an extended period. Neil says:
“It is well-known that family disputes and court proceedings are very emotional experiences. They can be stressful and confusing, even for the toughest of people.
I am conscious of how my clients are viewing and reacting to the things that occur during litigation, when I am guiding them through the process.”
In the conduct of his professional work, he aims to assist his clients to achieve their best available result as promptly as possible, to help reduce the financial and emotional cost involved – whilst making sure that the result properly takes account of their individual needs.
