Liza Marshall was called to the Bar in March 2000 and specialises in criminal law, occupational regulatory matters, domestic and family violence and family law.

Liza holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the Queensland University of Technology and a Bachelor of Commerce from Griffith University (with majors in Economics and Law). She is a member of the Bar Association of Queensland, the Women Lawyers Association of Queensland and the Family Law Practitioners Association.

Liza started her legal career as a paralegal clerk with the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in 1997 whilst completing her law degree at QUT. She was subsequently admitted as a Barrister and enjoyed a productive career within the CDPP, practising in various areas of Commonwealth crime including Commercial Prosecutions, Tax, Economic and Computer Crime and General Prosecutions.

Whilst at the CDPP Liza conducted or was involved in the prosecutions of some of the most substantial matters the office had prosecuted. These included insider trading matters, Ponzi schemes such as The Wattle Group, phoenix companies, criminal insolvent trading and fraud in Kleenmaid many other large fraud and tax evasion matters and money laundering offences. Liza particularly enjoyed this work.

Liza has substantial civil litigation experience in conducting confiscation proceedings from her time in the Criminal Assets branch of the CDPP. This work also involved conducting compulsory examinations under the legislation.

In 2014, Liza moved from prosecution to occupational regulatory work, as the Director of Hearings for the Office of the Health Ombudsman, a new independent statutory body (health complaints agency) in Queensland and co-regulator with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency. Whilst the fundamentals of this role were not dissimilar to prosecution work (with a protective rather than punitive focus) she enjoyed and embraced the challenges that came with the commencement of a new agency and new legislation, and was central to building a productive legal division and engaging in strategic and organisational planning and extensive stakeholder engagement. In this role Liza continued her advocacy work as a Barrister, whilst also managing a legal team.

Whilst at the OHO she also spent time as the Executive Director of Legal Services and the Director of Proceedings.

Liza moved to the Private Bar in 2018 and has continued to enjoy practice in crime and occupational regulation. Her practice now includes family and domestic violence matters and family law matters.

During her legal career she has also enjoyed lecturing and tutoring in the Justice Studies course at QUT and was a mentor for the readers on the Bar Practice Course for a number of years. Another mentoring highlight was her involvement in the International Crime Co-operation Workshop in 2009, where she shared her guidance and experience with prosecutors from various island nations regarding prosecution and confiscations actions.
